Sasan Gir the only place in India to spot Asiatic Lions, pride of our nation. In the early 20th century, the lion population of Gujarat suffered a tremendous setback. Due to their hunting their numbers were reduced to few, this situation was brought under control by the Nawab of Junagadh and latter active role of forest department has helped to bring up the population of this mighty beast. An area of 1421sq kms is declared as Gir National park and an additional 500sq kms has been made as buffer zone. Today there are around 523 lions in Gir National park. The Gir Forest is one of the largest tracks of dry deciduous forests in the world.

Along with Lions Gir is home for other predators like Leopard, Striped Hyenas, Jackal, Indian Fox and Wild Cat, Other Mammals sharing the same land are Spotted Deer, Antelopes, Chowsinga, Blackbuck, Chinkara, Wild Boar and Sambar. Gir, besides being Lion country, is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
